As you transition from shallow-water flats to deep-sea fishing, you'll quickly realize, like I did, that this game is very different from what you have done in the past. The most exciting and shocking thing for me was the size of the equipment required. Broom handle-sized fly rods with gimbal butts, fighting belts, pink and blue feather dusters with random hooks, and even special gloves for leading fish made me feel like a kid in a candy store. I still remember my first encounter with a gigantic Tibor Pacific reel and thinking, “I don’t know what you catch with one of these, but I sure as hell want to find out!” Every time we push off from the dock, I feel the same excitement, not knowing what might show up from the depths of the deep blue sea.

The anticipation and preparation for Pelagic species can take a little more thought at first since you’ll need to take into consideration a few more factors than usual…depth of the water, the size of the fish, and the diversity of species, some with sharp teeth, can be overwhelming. You'll need to pack both sinking and floating lines, and your equipment, leaders, tackle, and even the size of your flies will need to increase exponentially to withstand the torture treatment these migratory monsters can dole out.

Although I have written numerous species-specific books in the past, this is the first one to focus on the vast blue water world that provides countless species in a variety of depths to target on the fly. In this book, I have chosen to focus on what I consider “Bluewater Utility Flies,” or flies that have proven productive for me for a wide variety of species and fishing scenarios and that can easily be tied in a wide array of sizes and colors to be adapted to any offshore fishery.

I have purposely chosen patterns that cover a variety of prey items in the water column, from squid to sardines and everything in between. It wasn't an easy task, but I'm confident that the assortment of patterns outlined in this book will ensure that you're covered no matter what you might encounter at sea. In addition, the interviews with the contributing guides and gurus will provide you with insight into the factors you need to consider when creating and fishing your own flies.

Bluewater Flies contains step-by-step instructions for tying:
Borski’s Basic Billfish Bug, The Hamilton Special, Dr’ed Up Se Habit Bucktail, The Revised Albie Whore, Chicone’s Schooner Squid, Pineapple Grenade Pelagic Popper, Dirty Mack and M.I.A Anchovie. As well as detailed information on how to build your own Behemoth Baitfish Bugs, Tube Flies, and Tandem Hook Rigs. These eight proven pelagic patterns will tip the odds in your favor when tying flies for your next offshore adventure. This is a 202-page book illustrated with ultra-hi-resolution images.
